Using "who, what and where/when" strategy in class 2 for forming sentences - Sunel (Eng. Dept.)

Teacher’s reflections: Students of class 2 an activity on how to form sentences using nouns or naming words, verbs or doing verbs, adjectives or describing words. Teacher put the 3 glasses naming ‘Nouns’, ‘Verbs’ and ‘Adjectives’ and words written on the icecream sticks. The students were instructed to form groups of 4 and were told how to do the activity. Students made 3 columns on a paper “who”, “what they do” and “where/when”. They made sentences on words chosen by themselves from the 3 glasses. The activity was done properly and the students were able to make sentences with the help of the words. Overall activity was a success. I had to help them in placing the words in the correct column sometimes. The activity was supposed to be done from the story given in the content book. But I found it tough for the students and chose my own words. I found that students were not able to write sentences using helping words i.e. they wrote “tree standing big ground” instead of “tree is standing in a big ground”

Hi,
Thanks for posting this. I think this is a very interesting lesson plan. From what I read, I am not clear what the LO was. Was it to make sentences or was it to sort words? If it was to sort words, then I think you were successful. But if the LO was to make sentences using the words, I would like you to reflect on the following questions;

1. What instructions were given to children to make sentences?
2. Did you model this before asking them to do it so that they were forming correct sentences? You idea of using the noun, verb, adjective to show how these are used in framing a sentence is a really good idea but as you discovered, there are other parts of a sentence that kids need to know (is, are, prepositions, etc.)If the goal was to learn how to make sentences then this should have been part of the lesson plan. How would you modify this lesson if you had to do it again?

Would love to read your responses :)

Teacher's response:
Thank you for your comments.

The LO of this lesson was to frame sentences but I thought that before going to framing sentences I asked them to sort the words out and try to form sentences on their own.

I could have used Word Web and put some nouns in the center and put some list of "helping words" on the side of the board and asked students to form sentences using "helping words" and would have modeled for them.

Next time after this strategy I would use Word Web to help them frame sentences.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions, it helped me realize the shortcomings of my plan.
